This still life composition demonstrates his engagement with the formal experiments of the early twentieth century. The arrangement features a collection of domestic objects, including a central grey vase, a blue and white patterned dish, and a lidded vessel, all positioned against a dark, rectangular tray. The tray itself is decorated with red, leaf-like forms that provide a sharp contrast to the muted tones of the surrounding space.

The work displays a flattened perspective, characteristic of the period's move away from traditional representation. Man Ray employs a deliberate, somewhat simplified application of paint, focusing on the geometric relationships between the objects rather than their precise physical texture. The inclusion of a long, thin object, possibly a pipe or a decorative rod, adds a diagonal element that cuts across the composition, guiding the eye through the scene. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the interplay between the cool blues, the neutral grey of the central vase, and the stark black of the tray to create visual tension.

This painting offers a glimpse into the artist's formative years in New York, before his move to Paris. It shows an artist testing the boundaries of traditional still life painting, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the arrangement of form and colour. The work is signed and dated in the lower left corner, confirming its place within his early oeuvre. It remains a clear example of the stylistic shifts occurring in American art during the 1910s, as painters began to incorporate the lessons of European modernism into their own practice.

You might also like

Movement No. 10 by Marsden Hartley
Still Life by Lee Krasner
Man Ray artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Black-Tray_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120206145.jpg?v=1792198924
