This work, dated 1881, captures the rugged terrain surrounding the Chapel Saint-Michel at l'Estre. Buhot employs a combination of etching and drypoint to achieve a wide range of tonal effects, from the delicate, atmospheric lines of the distant horizon to the heavier, burred strokes that define the foreground.

The composition is structured around a sweeping view of the countryside, with the chapel positioned as a small, weathered silhouette against the sky. A lone figure carrying a bundle of sticks provides a sense of scale and human presence within the vast, open space. Buhot is known for his experimental approach to the printing process, often incorporating 'remarques' or marginal sketches into the plate edges, which add a personal, informal quality to his finished prints. The texture of the paper and the ink application contribute to the overall mood, which is one of quiet observation.

Buhot's technique involves layering lines to create depth and shadow, particularly in the rocky outcrops and the foliage. His ability to render light and weather conditions through varied line weights is evident here, as the sky appears heavy with moisture and the ground suggests the uneven texture of a rural path. This print reflects the artist's interest in the specific character of the French provinces, moving away from the polished, academic styles of the period in favour of a more direct, expressive engagement with the subject matter. The work remains a fine example of the technical mastery and atmospheric sensitivity that defined Buhot's career.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Chapel-Saint-Michel-at-l-Estre_Poster_CompositorV1_1791882649244.jpg?v=1791882886
