His career began with representational painting, but he moved towards total abstraction by the late 1940s. This transition was influenced by his interest in the relationship between form, space, and the physical properties of paint. The Cloud is an example of his later work, where he explored organic shapes and the fluid application of pigment to create atmospheric effects.

In this piece, Pasmore abandons traditional perspective and figurative representation. Instead, he focuses on the interaction of dark, nebulous forms against a lighter ground. The application of paint suggests a controlled yet spontaneous process, where the edges of the shapes bleed into the surrounding space. This technique creates a sense of depth and movement, despite the lack of identifiable objects. The composition relies on the balance of mass and void, inviting the viewer to engage with the work on a purely visual and sensory level.

Pasmore often worked with a limited palette, allowing the focus to remain on the structural qualities of the composition. His approach to abstraction was rooted in a desire to find a universal language of form. By stripping away the narrative elements of painting, he encouraged a direct response to the arrangement of shapes and tones. This work reflects his ongoing investigation into the nature of visual perception and the capacity of non-representational art to evoke a specific mood or atmosphere. The soft, blurred boundaries of the forms in The Cloud suggest a preoccupation with the ephemeral, capturing a sense of transition rather than a static image. It is a clear demonstration of his mastery over the medium and his ability to construct complex spatial relationships through simple, monochromatic means.

You might also like

Danger of Death by Jean Arp
Pelvis Series (Red with Yellow) by Georgia O'Keeffe

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Cloud_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120790420.jpg?v=1792201547
