Galle, a prolific Dutch engraver and publisher based in Antwerp, utilised the print medium to disseminate classical knowledge and architectural imagination to a wider audience.\n\nThe composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the background, the colossal statue of Helios stands astride the harbour entrance, holding a flaming beacon. This representation reflects the common, albeit historically debated, belief that the statue straddled the port. The foreground presents a contrasting scene: the fallen, fragmented head of the statue resting on the shore, surrounded by figures who appear to be examining or perhaps salvaging the bronze remains. This juxtaposition of the statue in its imagined glory and its eventual ruin provides a narrative of transience.\n\nGalle employs precise, controlled line work to define the architectural elements of the city and the muscular anatomy of the figures.
