Active during the late fourteenth century, Fei operated within the stylistic orbit of Agnolo Gaddi, producing works that reflect the transition from the rigid formality of earlier trecento painting toward the more decorative sensibilities of the International Gothic style. The surface displays the characteristic craquelure of a tempera-on-wood panel, revealing the physical history of the object.

Visible in this section are the vertical folds of a garment, rendered with a focus on linear rhythm rather than anatomical volume. The presence of small, circular indentations across the surface suggests the historical use of a punch tool, a common technique in medieval panel painting for creating decorative patterns in gilded backgrounds or haloes. These marks provide a tactile quality to the image, documenting the manual labour involved in the preparation of the panel.

Fei’s work often features elongated figures and a refined approach to drapery, which is evident in the subtle shifts of light and shadow across the fabric depicted here. The monochromatic presentation allows for a clear observation of the artist’s brushwork and the structural integrity of the paint layer. As a representative of the Florentine school, Fei’s output contributes to our understanding of the workshop practices that sustained the production of religious art in Italy before the full emergence of Renaissance naturalism. This print offers a close study of the material conditions of a medieval altarpiece, focusing on the interplay between the painted form and the aged surface of the support.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Coronation-of-the-Virgin-and-Saints_Poster_CompositorV1_1791873902730.jpg?v=1791874197
