The composition reflects the influence of Caravaggio, particularly in the use of dramatic lighting and the stark, unidealised treatment of the human form. Ter Brugghen spent time in Rome, where he absorbed the Italian master's approach to chiaroscuro, yet he adapted these techniques to suit the more restrained sensibilities of the Dutch Republic.

The painting depicts the central figure of Christ on the cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. The figures are placed against a dark, atmospheric background, which draws the viewer's attention to the emotional weight of the scene. Ter Brugghen avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the physical reality of the event. The pallor of Christ's skin, the visible wounds, and the sombre expressions of the mourners create a sense of quiet gravity. At the base of the cross, a skull and bones serve as traditional memento mori, reminding the viewer of mortality.

Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's skill in handling oil paint to achieve subtle transitions in tone. The drapery of the Virgin's robes, rendered in muted purples and greys, contrasts with the more saturated red and green garments worn by Saint John. The lighting is focused, illuminating the figures while leaving the surrounding space in shadow. This arrangement creates a sense of physical presence and emotional immediacy. Ter Brugghen's work remains a significant example of how Northern European artists integrated the innovations of the Italian Baroque into their own traditions, resulting in a style that is both technically precise and emotionally direct.

You might also like

The Entombment by Peter Paul Rubens
The Adoration of the Shepherds - Rembrandt van Rijn by Rembrandt

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Crucifixion-with-the-Virgin-and-Saint-John_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124366777.jpg?v=1792211729
https://www.solisprints.com/products/the-crucifixion-with-the-virgin-and-saint-john-hendrick-ter-brugghen
