The composition features a group of figures gathered in a grassy field, their attention directed toward a large, luminous full moon suspended in the night sky. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, with two standing figures gesturing upwards while a group of five seated individuals observe the celestial event from below.

The print utilises the nishiki-e technique, which allows for the application of multiple colours. The palette remains restrained, relying on soft greens for the meadow, muted reds and greys for the kimonos, and a pale wash for the sky. The tall grasses, rendered with delicate lines, frame the figures and provide a sense of place. The figures themselves are depicted with the characteristic stylised features of the period, wearing patterned garments that add texture to the composition without overwhelming the scene.

Ishikawa Toyomasa was a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e tradition, a genre that documented the customs and pastimes of the Edo period. This work captures a quiet, communal moment of appreciation for nature. The absence of complex perspective is typical of the era, as the artist prioritises the clarity of the narrative and the decorative quality of the print. The cartouche in the upper right corner provides the title, identifying the specific seasonal context of the image. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural practices of eighteenth-century Japan, where the observation of the moon served as a common social activity. The work remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in the production of Japanese woodblock prints during this time.

You might also like

Net Fishing at Night by Kitagawa Utamaro
Gezelschap onder een kersenboom by Katsukawa Shuntei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Eighth-Month_Poster_CompositorV1_1791938802072.jpg?v=1791947472
