the-entombment-hieronymus-bosch
The Entombment - Hieronymus Bosch

A sombre pen and ink drawing by Hieronymus Bosch, depicting the burial of Christ with expressive figures and precise line work.

This drawing, attributed to the Dutch master Hieronymus Bosch, depicts the solemn moment of Christ being placed into the tomb. The composition centres on the recumbent figure of Christ, supported by figures who display a range of mourning gestures. The artist employs a linear style, using ink to define the heavy folds of drapery and the expressive, somewhat elongated features of the mourners.

Unlike the fantastical, crowded scenes often associated with Bosch, this work focuses on a singular, traditional religious narrative. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, which directs the viewer's attention to the central action. The handling of the ink suggests a preparatory study or a finished drawing intended for a private collection. The stark contrast between the light and shadow, achieved through hatching and cross-hatching, provides a sense of volume to the figures despite the lack of colour.

Bosch was active in the late 15th and early 16th centuries in the Netherlands. While he is widely recognised for his complex moralising allegories, his drawings reveal a mastery of human anatomy and emotional expression. This particular work reflects the stylistic conventions of the period, where the focus remained on the devotional quality of the subject matter. The figures surrounding the tomb are rendered with a degree of restraint, allowing the gravity of the scene to remain the primary concern. The work provides an insight into the draughtsmanship of a period that bridged the late Gothic and the burgeoning Renaissance in Northern Europe. It remains a clear example of the artist's ability to convey narrative weight through line alone, stripped of the elaborate iconography found in his larger panel paintings.

You might also like

The Entombment of Christ by Lucas Cranach the Elder
Crucifixion by Matthias Grünewald

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Entombment_Poster_CompositorV1_1792122128454.jpg?v=1792207266
