The composition focuses on a toddler taking their initial independent movements towards a seated woman, who reaches out with open arms. A nursemaid stands nearby, her hands raised in encouragement, while an elderly woman observes from the shadows of the foliage. The setting is a garden, rendered with the loose, fluid brushwork characteristic of Fragonard's later period.

The palette relies on soft, muted tones for the background, allowing the figures to emerge through subtle shifts in light. The mother's silk dress, rendered in shades of pale pink and cream, provides a luminous contrast to the darker, verdant surroundings. Fragonard employs a delicate touch to define the textures of the fabric and the soft features of the child. The inclusion of a small dog near the wicker cradle adds a sense of lived-in reality to the scene.

This work reflects the shift in late eighteenth-century French art towards themes of family, childhood, and the private sphere. Unlike the grand historical or mythological subjects that dominated earlier decades, this painting prioritises the observation of daily life. The arrangement of the figures creates a gentle, circular motion that draws the eye across the canvas, from the nursemaid's anticipation to the child's tentative progress and finally to the mother's welcoming gesture. The play of light and shadow across the garden setting creates a sense of depth, grounding the figures within a specific, albeit idyllic, environment. Fragonard's ability to balance technical fluidity with narrative warmth is evident here, offering a glimpse into the domestic values of the era.

You might also like

A Mother Nursing Her Child by Joost van Geel
A Mother Delousing Her Child's Hair by Pieter de Hooch
More by Jean-Honoré Fragonard →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-First-Steps_Poster_CompositorV1_1792302678520.jpg?v=1792302909
