the-flame-jackson-pollock
The Flame - Jackson Pollock

An early, expressive work by Jackson Pollock, featuring turbulent brushwork and a fiery palette of red, black, and ochre.

Painted during the 1930s, The Flame represents an early phase in the career of Jackson Pollock. Before he became known for his signature drip technique, Pollock worked in a style heavily influenced by the Mexican Muralists and the regionalist painters of the era. This work displays the raw, emotive energy that would define his later output, yet it remains grounded in figurative and symbolic forms.

The composition is dominated by aggressive, swirling brushwork that suggests a sense of turbulence. The palette is restricted to deep blacks, fiery reds, and muted ochres, which work together to create a sense of heat and movement. The forms are distorted and abstracted, pushing the boundaries of representation to convey a psychological state rather than a literal scene. The paint application is thick and tactile, showing the physical exertion of the artist as he worked the surface of the canvas.

This piece offers a look into the formative years of an artist who would eventually change the course of modern art. It lacks the total abstraction of his later works, but it contains the same intensity and focus on the act of painting itself. The viewer can observe the early development of his rhythmic, all-over approach to composition, where the eye is encouraged to move across the entire surface rather than settling on a single point. As a museum-grade fine art print, this reproduction captures the heavy impasto and the specific colour relationships of the original oil painting, providing an accurate representation of Pollock's early aesthetic concerns and his mastery of expressive, gestural mark-making.

You might also like

Figuur tegen zwarte achtergrond by Lucebert
Mann, Pferd, Kuh by Heinrich Campendonk

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Flame_Poster_CompositorV1_1792108042241.jpg?v=1792131332
