This shift occurred during his time at the Camberwell School of Art and his subsequent involvement with the Constructionist movement. The composition consists of organic, amoebic forms rendered in varying shades of green, set against a pale, neutral ground.

Pasmore employs a limited palette to explore the relationship between shape, space, and surface. The soft-edged green masses appear to float, creating a sense of suspension rather than traditional depth. Interspersed among these organic shapes are precise, linear elements and small, circular points of colour. These marks act as visual anchors, providing a contrast to the fluid, atmospheric nature of the larger forms. The work reflects Pasmore's interest in the spatial theories of the period, where the canvas is treated as a field for the arrangement of visual elements rather than a window into a scene.

By the early 1950s, Pasmore had abandoned the figurative subjects that defined his early career. He began to focus on the properties of line, plane, and colour. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance spontaneity with structural control. The application of paint is smooth, allowing the forms to merge and overlap with a sense of lightness. The Green Earth is an example of the artist's transition into a more systematic approach to painting, where the arrangement of elements is determined by the internal logic of the composition itself. It remains a clear expression of the mid-century British move towards non-objective art, prioritising the physical presence of the work over narrative content.

You might also like

Dance by Jean Arp
Proto-Form (B) by Josef Albers
Victor Pasmore prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Green-Earth_Poster_CompositorV1_1792126740075.jpg?v=1792289377
