The composition is dominated by a field of young wheat, rendered with rhythmic, directional brushstrokes that convey the movement of the stalks under a breeze. The artist employs a palette of greens, yellows, and blues to define the terrain and the sky above.

In the background, the Alpilles mountains rise against a turbulent, cloud-filled sky. The application of paint is thick and deliberate, a technique characteristic of the artist's period in the south of France. He uses short, broken lines to build texture, creating a sense of energy across the canvas. The inclusion of small red poppies scattered through the foreground adds contrast to the dominant green tones of the wheat.

This painting reflects the artist's focus on the natural world during his stay at the asylum. He often turned to the immediate surroundings of the institution for his subjects, finding order and rhythm in the cultivated fields. The work demonstrates his ability to transform a familiar view into a study of colour and motion. The structure of the painting is balanced by the horizontal line of the path, which separates the foreground from the distant hills. This piece is a clear example of his mature style, where the physical application of paint is as important as the subject itself. The work remains a primary example of his output during the final year of his life, documenting the environment that occupied his attention during his recovery.

You might also like

The Park near Saint-Cloud by Maximilien Luce
White Houses, Ville d'Avray by Georges Seurat
Vincent van Gogh prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Green-Wheatfield-behind-the-Asylum_Poster_CompositorV1_1791967831134.jpg?v=1791968546
