the-holy-family-lodovico-lana
The Holy Family - Lodovico Lana

A seventeenth-century etching by Lodovico Lana depicting the Holy Family in a moment of quiet, domestic contemplation.

This etching by the Italian artist Lodovico Lana depicts the Holy Family in a moment of quiet domesticity. Lana, active in the seventeenth century, was a painter and printmaker associated with the school of Modena. His work often reflects the stylistic tendencies of the Baroque period, characterised by a focus on emotional resonance and dramatic light, even within the smaller scale of a print.

The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who holds the Christ Child. Beside them, Saint Joseph observes a small book, his expression one of focused contemplation. A cherub appears in the upper left corner, adding a spiritual dimension to the scene. The artist employs varied hatching techniques to define the forms, creating a sense of volume in the drapery and the figures themselves. The background is kept relatively simple, with horizontal lines providing a subtle contrast to the more fluid, rounded shapes of the figures.

Lana's approach to the medium of etching allows for a certain spontaneity in the line work. The figures are rendered with a balance of naturalism and idealisation, typical of the religious art produced in Italy during this era. The print captures a tender interaction between the figures, moving away from more rigid, formal depictions of the subject. The signature of the artist is visible at the bottom of the plate, indicating his direct involvement in the production of this work. This piece offers a glimpse into the printmaking practices of the seventeenth century, where such works were often created to disseminate religious imagery to a wider audience. The print remains a clear example of the technical skill and thematic concerns prevalent in the work of Lana and his contemporaries.

You might also like

Portrait of Charles I of England - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting - Artemisia Gentileschi — Artemisia Gentileschi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Holy-Family_Poster_CompositorV1_1791803591224.jpg?v=1791803909
