Albrecht Dürer depicts the extended family of Jesus, including the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and various relatives, gathered in a wooded setting. The composition is dense, with figures arranged in a tight group that occupies the foreground, while the background features trees and a glimpse of a distant hill.

At the base of the group, two putti or musical angels are positioned on the ground. One plays a lute, while the other holds a wind instrument, adding a secular, melodic element to the sacred scene. Dürer employs his characteristic mastery of line to define the heavy folds of the garments and the textures of the foliage. The cross-hatching techniques create depth and volume, allowing the figures to emerge from the shadows of the forest. The artist's monogram, AD, is visible in the upper centre, accompanied by the date.

This work belongs to a period when Dürer was refining his printmaking techniques, moving away from the stark contrasts of his earlier works toward a more nuanced tonal range. The figures exhibit the anatomical precision and expressive faces typical of his mature style. The arrangement of the figures reflects the artist's interest in human relationships and the domestic nature of the Holy Family. By placing these figures in a natural environment, Dürer brings a sense of immediacy to the religious narrative. This print remains a fine example of the technical capabilities of the woodcut medium in the early sixteenth century, demonstrating the precision achievable through the carving of pearwood blocks. The balance between the solemnity of the adults and the playfulness of the angels creates a composition that is both structured and lively.

You might also like

Madonna and Child on a Grassy Bank by Hans Baldung Grien
Two Angels Holding Banners with the Name Jesus by Hans Holbein the Younger

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Holy-Kinship-with-Two-Musical-Angels_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124678886.jpg?v=1792296106
