This work, depicting the Iles d'Hyeres in the Var region of France, demonstrates his application of the pointillist technique. Cross moved away from the strict, scientific colour theories of Georges Seurat, opting instead for a more lyrical and expressive use of small, distinct dots of paint.

The composition is divided into horizontal bands of colour, representing the sandy shore, the shallow water, the deeper sea, and the distant islands under a soft sky. By placing complementary colours side by side, Cross achieves a luminous quality that mimics the effect of Mediterranean sunlight reflecting off the water. The individual dots of yellow, blue, and violet merge in the eye of the viewer, creating a sense of shimmering movement across the surface of the canvas.

Unlike the rigid structures often found in early pointillist works, this painting prioritises the atmospheric conditions of the coast. The artist spent much of his later life in the south of France, where the quality of light heavily influenced his palette. His approach to colour theory allowed for a greater degree of emotional resonance, moving the movement toward the later developments of Fauvism. This piece captures the quiet stillness of the French coastline, reduced to its essential chromatic components. It remains a clear example of the transition from the analytical methods of the 1880s to the more subjective colour explorations that defined the early twentieth century.

You might also like

Women at the Well by Paul Signac
Citadel Coast by Maximilien Luce
Henri-Edmond Cross artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Iles-d-Or-The-Iles-d-Hyeres-Var-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123105325.jpg?v=1792288673
