During this period, Francis Picabia worked within the stylistic framework of Impressionism, focusing on the play of light across water and the architectural forms of the harbour. The composition features a cluster of white buildings on the left, their facades reflecting the bright Mediterranean sun. Several small boats are moored in the foreground, their dark hulls contrasting with the lighter tones of the water and sky.

Picabia employs a technique characterised by visible, rhythmic brushwork. He applies paint in distinct strokes, which allows the viewer to observe the construction of the image. The palette consists of soft blues, creams, and earthy ochres, capturing the specific quality of light found in the Provence region. The water surface acts as a mirror, reflecting the sky and the silhouettes of the vessels. A small rowboat with two figures occupies the right side of the frame, providing a sense of scale and human activity within the quiet harbour scene.

This painting belongs to a series of works Picabia produced during his early career, before his transition into more experimental modes of expression. It demonstrates his technical proficiency in capturing atmospheric conditions and his interest in the traditional subjects of the French school. The work remains a clear example of his engagement with the Impressionist tradition, prioritising the immediate visual experience of the harbour over rigid detail. The signature and date are visible in the lower right corner, confirming the location and year of production. This print offers a view into the early development of an artist who would later become a central figure in the Dada and Surrealist movements, showing his initial grounding in the observation of light and colour.

You might also like

View of the Port of Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme - Eugène Boudin by Eugène Louis Boudin
The Port of Dieppe by Eugène Boudin

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Martigues_Poster_CompositorV1_1792127091218.jpg?v=1792291073
