In this work, he captures the harbour at Douvelan with the characteristic light and atmospheric focus of the Impressionist movement. The composition is anchored by the lighthouse on the left, which stands against the rocky cliffs, while the calm waters of the port provide a reflective surface for the passing sailing vessels.

Moret employs a technique of short, broken brushstrokes to render the movement of the water and the texture of the coastal terrain. The palette is dominated by cool blues and greens, balanced by the warmer tones of the boat sails and the sun-drenched rocks. Unlike the more radical experiments of his contemporaries, Moret maintained a clear representational focus, ensuring the geography of the Breton coast remained recognisable. His interest in the interplay between natural light and the maritime environment is evident in the way the sky and sea merge at the horizon, creating a sense of openness and airiness.

This piece reflects the artist's deep familiarity with the region, as he frequently returned to these specific coastal motifs throughout his career. The inclusion of small figures in the boats adds a sense of human activity to the otherwise quiet scene, grounding the atmospheric effects in a specific moment of daily life. By focusing on the interplay of colour and light, Moret creates a scene that feels immediate and observational. The work is a representative example of his later period, where his application of paint became more fluid and his colour choices more nuanced, moving away from the darker tones of his earlier training. It remains a clear depiction of the French maritime tradition at the turn of the twentieth century.

You might also like

Portrieux by Eugène Boudin
Saint-Briac, Le Bechet by Paul Signac
Henry Moret artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Port-of-Douvelan_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119601482.jpg?v=1792197187
