The painting depicts a female figure wearing a red turban, positioned against a patterned backdrop. Beside her, a bowl of fruit sits upon a table. The composition relies on the contrast between the warm, golden tones of the figure's skin and the cooler, flat green of the wall.

Pechstein employs a direct, unrefined application of paint that characterises the German Expressionist approach. The figure is rendered with simplified anatomy, prioritising emotional impact over anatomical precision. The red turban provides a visual anchor, drawing the eye to the upper portion of the canvas, while the blue bowl offers a secondary point of interest. The background pattern adds a decorative element that flattens the pictorial space, a common technique in the work of the Die Brücke artists who sought to move away from traditional perspective.

This piece reflects the interest in non-Western art and primitive forms that influenced Pechstein throughout his career. The bold outlines and non-naturalistic colour choices are typical of his output from the early 1910s. By rejecting academic standards of beauty, Pechstein creates a direct, immediate image. The work captures the tension between the domestic setting and the raw, expressive power of the brushwork. It remains a clear example of the stylistic shift occurring in early twentieth-century German art, where the focus moved toward the subjective experience of the artist rather than the objective representation of the subject.

You might also like

Woman with a Bag by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff
Lee and his sister Hoetger by Paula Modersohn-Becker
Max Pechstein artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Red-Turban_Poster_CompositorV1_1792129879966.jpg?v=1792298051
