The composition depicts a bearded male figure, the sculptor, seated beside a large, detached head and a standing female statue. The scene is framed by architectural elements, specifically columns that open onto a view of the sea, suggesting a Mediterranean setting.

Picasso employs a mix of classical themes and modern distortion. The sculptor appears contemplative, his physical form rendered with a sense of weight and presence. The female statue, positioned to the left, possesses a dark, solid quality that contrasts with the more fluid treatment of the sculptor himself. The inclusion of the oversized, mask-like head introduces a surreal element, typical of the artist's work during these years. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones for the figures and architecture, punctuated by the bright red of the drapery and the turquoise of the distant water.

This piece reflects the artist's ongoing dialogue with the history of art, particularly the tradition of the studio interior. By placing the sculptor in such close proximity to his work, Picasso examines the blurred boundaries between the artist's identity and the subjects they produce. The spatial arrangement is relatively shallow, drawing the viewer's attention to the interaction between the three primary forms. The brushwork is expressive, allowing the underlying structure of the figures to remain visible. This print captures the texture and tonal variations of the original oil painting, providing a clear view of the artist's approach to form and narrative in the early 1930s.

You might also like

The Studio of Ingres by Victor Pasmore
Water Carrying on Capri by Alexandre Jacovleff
Pablo Picasso artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Sculptor-and-His-Statue_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124904522.jpg?v=1792296345
