The New English Art Club functioned as a reaction against the conservative tendencies of the Royal Academy, and this work depicts the group of artists responsible for choosing works for the annual exhibition. Orpen includes himself in the composition, surrounded by his contemporaries, including Walter Sickert, Augustus John, and William Rothenstein. Each figure is identified by a small red inscription above their head, a stylistic choice that adds a documentary quality to the scene.

The composition focuses on the act of judgment. A member of the jury holds a painting upright for inspection, while his colleagues lean forward to examine the work. The lighting is dramatic, casting deep shadows across the faces of the men and creating a sense of concentration. Orpen employs a painterly technique, using visible brushstrokes to define the forms and the atmosphere of the room. The palette is dominated by dark, earthy tones, which contrast with the lighter areas of the canvas being reviewed and the white table surface in the foreground.

This painting provides a record of the social and professional networks that defined the British art world during this period. By depicting the jury in the process of selection, Orpen offers a view into the internal mechanisms of the art institution. The work is not merely a portrait of individuals, but a representation of the collective authority held by these artists. It remains a significant document of the New English Art Club, reflecting the aesthetic values and the collaborative spirit of the members who sought to promote modern painting in Britain.

You might also like

Homage to Cézanne by Maurice Denis
The Jury of the Salon de Peinture by Henri Gervex

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Selecting-Jury-of-the-New-English-Art-Club_Poster_CompositorV1_1791929189093.jpg?v=1791941538
