Created around 1644, the work displays the artist's characteristic use of line to define form and shadow. The composition centres on a figure resting beneath the dense foliage of a large tree, while a cow stands nearby in the shade. To the left, two other figures are positioned, their forms rendered with economical, expressive strokes that suggest their presence without excessive detail.

Rembrandt employs a variety of hatching techniques to create the atmospheric depth typical of his graphic work. The contrast between the illuminated areas and the deep, dark recesses of the woods is achieved through layered lines, a hallmark of his approach to etching. The scene captures a quiet, pastoral moment, reflecting the artist's interest in everyday subjects observed with a keen, humanistic eye. The figures appear relaxed, their postures conveying a sense of stillness that contrasts with the textured, energetic lines used to depict the surrounding nature.

As a printmaker, Rembrandt pushed the boundaries of the etching process, often reworking plates to adjust the tonal balance. This particular work shows his ability to evoke a specific mood through light and shadow, a skill that defined his broader body of work in painting and drawing. The print provides an insight into the seventeenth-century Dutch approach to genre subjects, where the mundane activities of rural life were elevated through artistic observation. The work remains a clear example of his command over the copper plate, where every mark serves to build the narrative of the scene.

You might also like

The Singing Shepherdess by Nicolaes Berchem
Mounted Farmer Giving Alms to a Begging Boy by Johannes Visscher
Rembrandt prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Sleeping-Herdsman_Poster_CompositorV1_1792304814204.jpg?v=1792398003
