Redon produced these works using charcoal and lithographic crayon to explore the boundaries between reality and the subconscious. The composition features a stoic, Egyptian-style Sphinx positioned on the left, observing a dark, winged Chimera that hovers in the shadows. The contrast between the light-toned, static Sphinx and the dense, velvety blackness of the Chimera creates a sense of psychological tension.

Redon was a central figure in the Symbolist movement. His work often drew upon literary themes, mythology, and dreams rather than direct observation of the physical world. In this print, the artist captures the dialogue between two mythical entities. The Sphinx represents a fixed, intellectual gaze, while the Chimera embodies a fluid, ethereal presence. The text included below the image provides the specific voices of these characters, grounding the visual mystery in a narrative context. Redon's mastery of lithography allowed him to achieve a wide range of tonal values, from the softest greys to the deepest, most saturated blacks. This technical skill gives the print a haunting, atmospheric quality that draws the viewer into a dreamlike state. The work reflects the artist's interest in the unseen, the irrational, and the poetic potential of the imagination. It is a prime example of how Redon used traditional printmaking techniques to push the boundaries of visual representation, moving away from the descriptive towards the evocative.

You might also like

Amor (from the series A Glove) by Max Klinger
The Moment of Birth by Alfred Kubin
Odilon Redon artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Sphinx-and-the-Chimera_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121223103.jpg?v=1792399385
