the-temptation-of-saint-mary-magdalen-johann-liss-1
The Temptation of Saint Mary Magdalen - Johann Liss

A dramatic Baroque oil painting by Johann Liss, depicting the spiritual struggle of Saint Mary Magdalen through masterful use of light and shadow.

Johann Liss, a German painter active in Italy during the early 17th century, produced this work during his Venetian period. The composition captures a moment of spiritual conflict, featuring Saint Mary Magdalen at the centre, flanked by figures representing worldly distractions. Liss employs a tenebrist approach, using deep shadows to push the figures forward into the viewer's space. The light source is focused, illuminating the pale skin of the Magdalen and the textures of the fabric, while the background remains obscured in darkness.

The artist's brushwork is fluid and confident, a characteristic trait of his mature style. He balances the physical presence of the figures with the psychological weight of the subject matter. The Magdalen holds a skull, a traditional memento mori, which serves as a reminder of mortality and the vanity of earthly life. The figure to the right, often interpreted as a tempter or a personification of worldly desire, leans in with a gaze that contrasts with the Magdalen's upward, contemplative expression. The colour palette is restrained, relying on ochres, deep blues, and warm flesh tones to create a sense of drama.

Liss was influenced by the works of Caravaggio and the Venetian masters, particularly Titian and Veronese. This synthesis of styles allowed him to create works that feel both immediate and classical. The painting demonstrates his ability to manage complex figure groups within a confined space. By focusing on the interaction between the three figures, Liss avoids unnecessary clutter, allowing the viewer to engage directly with the narrative tension. This museum-grade print captures the subtle gradations of light and the tactile quality of the paint, preserving the atmospheric intensity of the original oil on canvas.

You might also like

The Entombment of Christ by Peter Paul Rubens
The Descent from the Cross by Tintoretto
Johann Liss prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Temptation-of-Saint-Mary-Magdalen_Poster_CompositorV1_1792129738184.jpg?v=1792292523
