the-white-kimono-childe-hassam
The White Kimono - Childe Hassam

An evocative 1915 etching by Childe Hassam, capturing a woman in a floral kimono standing before a fireplace.

Childe Hassam, a central figure in American Impressionism, produced this etching in 1915. The work depicts a woman standing before a fireplace, wearing a patterned kimono. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, recessed space of the hearth and the lighter, detailed surface of the figure's garment. Hassam uses fine, rhythmic lines to define the texture of the fabric and the architectural elements of the mantelpiece.

The influence of Japonisme is evident in the choice of subject matter. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many Western artists adopted Japanese aesthetic principles, including the use of flat patterns and domestic scenes. Hassam captures a quiet, private moment, focusing on the interplay of light and shadow within an interior setting. The etching demonstrates his technical proficiency with the medium, as he employs varied line weights to suggest depth and form without relying on tonal washes.

This print reflects the artist's interest in the domestic sphere, a common theme in his later graphic work. The mantelpiece is adorned with decorative objects, which Hassam renders with quick, precise strokes. The figure remains in profile, her attention directed toward the fire, which creates a sense of stillness. By stripping away colour, the artist directs the viewer to the structural composition and the decorative quality of the kimono's floral pattern. The work is a characteristic example of Hassam's printmaking practice, which often explored the intersection of modern life and traditional decorative arts.

You might also like

Child in Kimono by Lilla Cabot Perry
The Japanese Robe by Alfred Stevens

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-White-Kimono_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124554368.jpg?v=1792286489
