Surimono were privately commissioned woodblock prints, often produced for poetry circles, and they are characterised by their high production quality, including the use of metallic pigments and embossing. Gakutei, a student of Hokusai, was a master of this refined format.

The composition focuses on the texture and form of the toasted rice cakes resting on a lacquered tray. The artist captures the charred, uneven surfaces of the mochi with precision, contrasting the scorched dark areas against the pale, soft interior of the rice. The surrounding floral motifs, rendered in a delicate, understated style, provide a sense of seasonal context. The inclusion of calligraphy, which integrates seamlessly with the visual elements, is a hallmark of the surimono tradition. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where everyday objects were elevated through careful observation and artistic interpretation.

As a fine art print, this piece offers a glimpse into the sophisticated culture of nineteenth-century Japan. The balance between the bold, dark marks on the mochi and the subtle, light-coloured background demonstrates Gakutei's technical skill. The print avoids unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the viewer to appreciate the simplicity of the subject matter. It is a quiet, contemplative work that captures a specific cultural moment with clarity and restraint. The printing process for such works involved multiple blocks to achieve the subtle colour gradations and textures seen here, ensuring that the final result remains faithful to the original aesthetic intent of the artist.

You might also like

Jo and Uba of Takasago Looking at the Rising Sun - Totoya Hokkei — Totoya Hokkei
Frolicking Figures and Animals - Kawanabe Kyōsai — Kawanabe Kyōsai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Toasted-Mochi_Poster_CompositorV1_1790841719495.jpg?v=1790842580
