Goudt, a Dutch artist who spent significant time in Rome, created this work after a painting by Adam Elsheimer. The composition depicts the archangel Raphael guiding the young Tobias across a stream, accompanied by a small dog. The figures are positioned in the foreground, while the background features a dense, atmospheric wooded area and a distant river scene.

Goudt is recognised for his technical mastery of the copper plate, particularly his ability to translate Elsheimer's painterly approach into a monochromatic medium. He employs a range of line weights and cross-hatching techniques to suggest the texture of foliage, the ripples of the water, and the soft light filtering through the trees. The scene is quiet and contemplative, focusing on the journey of the travellers rather than dramatic action.

The lower portion of the print includes a Latin inscription, a common feature in prints of this period, which provides context for the biblical narrative. The attention to detail, from the individual feathers on the angel's wings to the reflections on the water surface, demonstrates the precision characteristic of Goudt's output. This print offers a view into the collaboration between Northern European artists working in Italy during the early seventeenth century, reflecting the exchange of ideas and techniques that defined the era. The work remains a fine example of the period's interest in combining religious subject matter with atmospheric, naturalistic settings.

You might also like

Portrait of Charles I of England - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting - Artemisia Gentileschi — Artemisia Gentileschi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Tobias-and-the-Angel-small-plate-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791876087369.jpg?v=1791876261
