Zadkine, a sculptor by trade, applies his understanding of volume and mass to the two-dimensional surface. The composition features two figures, or perhaps a singular form split into dualities, rendered through sharp, angular lines and dense cross-hatching. The forms are fragmented, a characteristic approach within the Cubist tradition, where the artist prioritises the structural integrity of the subject over realistic representation.

The work relies on a stark contrast between the white of the paper and the black ink. Zadkine uses hatching to create depth and shadow, giving the flat shapes a sense of weight. The lines are deliberate and precise, tracing the outlines of the figures while simultaneously breaking them apart into smaller, interlocking planes. This technique forces the viewer to reconstruct the image mentally, engaging with the tension between the solid forms and the negative space surrounding them.

As a sculptor, Zadkine often explored the relationship between the human figure and the environment. In this print, the figures appear to merge with their surroundings, their limbs and torsos becoming part of a larger, rhythmic pattern. The work lacks traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, ornamental arrangement that emphasises the graphic quality of the medium. The signature O.Z. appears in the lower right, confirming the artist's hand in this graphic exploration of form. This piece offers a glimpse into the experimental nature of Zadkine's graphic work, where he applied the same rigour found in his stone and bronze carvings to the copper plate. It is a study of balance, symmetry, and the reduction of the human form to its essential geometric components.

You might also like

Le lien secret by Victor Brauner
Mofumbe by Wifredo Lam
Ossip Zadkine prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Twins_Poster_CompositorV1_1792128924179.jpg?v=1792297782
