This collective of artists sought to move away from naturalistic representation, favouring instead a decorative approach that prioritised flat planes of colour and simplified forms. The influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which were widely collected by the Nabis, is evident in the composition. The space is compressed, and the figures of the dogs are rendered as dark, silhouette-like shapes against a textured, verdant background.

The painting depicts two poodles in a playful, almost chaotic interaction. One dog stands upright, while the other appears to be rolling on the ground. Bonnard uses a limited palette, contrasting the deep, near-black tones of the animals with a bright, grassy green that fills the remainder of the canvas. The surface texture is notable, as the paint is applied in a manner that suggests the influence of decorative arts and textile design. The artist's signature is visible in the upper left corner, accompanied by the date.

Bonnard's work from this period often explored domestic subjects, yet he treated them with a stylistic freedom that departed from traditional academic painting. By reducing the poodles to essential shapes, he focuses on the rhythm and movement of the scene rather than anatomical precision. This approach allows the viewer to engage with the image as a graphic arrangement of colour and form. The work demonstrates the artist's early interest in the decorative potential of painting, a theme that would continue to occupy him throughout his career. This fine art print captures the distinct texture and colour balance of the original oil painting, making it a suitable addition for those interested in the transition toward modernism in late nineteenth-century French art.

You might also like

Girl from Savoy by Paul Sérusier
Self-Portrait with his Family in Front of Their House by Maurice Denis
Pierre Bonnard artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Two-Poodles_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123032758.jpg?v=1792288634
