two-women-with-falcons-bunryo
Two Women with Falcons - Bunryō

A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Bunryō, depicting two women with falcons in a classic Edo-period portrait style.

This woodblock print, attributed to the artist Bunryō, captures a refined moment of falconry. The composition focuses on two women, their figures positioned in close proximity to birds of prey. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the facial features and the elaborate hairstyles of the subjects, which are characteristic of the late eighteenth-century Edo period. The falcons, rendered with attention to their plumage and sharp gazes, provide a contrast to the calm expressions of the women.

The print exhibits the aesthetic conventions of the Ukiyo-e school, where the focus remains on the grace of the figures and the balance of the composition. The use of space is minimal, directing the viewer to the interaction between the human subjects and the birds. The paper shows signs of age, which contributes to the muted, monochromatic appearance of the work. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural interests of the time, where the sport of falconry was often associated with the nobility and the warrior class, yet here it is presented within a domestic or leisurely context.

Bunryō, while less documented than some of his contemporaries, demonstrates a clear command of the woodblock medium. The print relies on the precision of the carved lines to convey texture, particularly in the feathers of the birds and the folds of the kimono. The work is an example of the portraiture style that dominated the period, prioritising the elegance of the subjects over environmental detail. It serves as a study in composition and line, reflecting the technical standards of Japanese printmaking during the late Edo era. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, preserving the original character and the subtle tonal variations of the aged paper.

You might also like

Ladies Surrounding a Cart - Utamaro II — Utamaro II
A Party of Merrymakers in a House in the Yoshiwara on a Moonlight Night - Kitagawa Utamaro — Kitagawa Utamaro

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Two-Women-with-Falcons_Poster_CompositorV1_1791678035959.jpg?v=1791678536
