Produced in 1944, Ubu (Totem) reflects the artist's engagement with the human form through a lens of geometric abstraction. The composition presents a figure that is both architectural and organic, echoing the modular logic he applied to his building designs.

The work features a central, stacked arrangement that suggests a totemic presence. Le Corbusier employs a palette of muted earth tones, ochres, and soft greens, which are punctuated by darker, linear contours. These lines define the structure of the figure, creating a sense of internal volume despite the flattened perspective. The title references the character Ubu, a figure of absurdity and grotesque satire, yet the execution remains disciplined and formal. The artist balances these disparate elements through a careful distribution of colour and shape, ensuring that no single area dominates the viewer's attention.

Technically, the painting demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between mass and void. The forms appear to be constructed rather than drawn, mirroring his approach to urban planning and structural design. The surface texture suggests a layering of paint, which adds a tactile quality to the geometric planes. This work provides insight into the private visual language of a man who sought to rationalise the built environment. By reducing the figure to its essential components, Le Corbusier invites the viewer to consider the underlying order of the subject matter. It is a study in balance, restraint, and the application of modernist principles to the canvas, far removed from the grand scale of his architectural projects, yet sharing their fundamental concern for proportion and spatial harmony.

You might also like

Still Life (Composition with Flowers) by Fernand Léger
A woman for Gods by Paul Klee
Le Corbusier artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Ubu-Totem-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117460499.jpg?v=1792140426
