Created during the mid-1940s, the piece predates his most famous large-scale drip paintings. It reveals a transition from his earlier figurative influences toward the non-representational style that defined his career. The composition relies on a series of ink splatters, fluid lines, and dense clusters of marks that populate the cream-coloured paper surface.

Pollock utilised the physical movement of his hand to dictate the placement of ink, allowing for a sense of spontaneity. The marks vary in weight, ranging from thin, delicate drips to heavier, more deliberate blots. Small touches of muted red provide a subtle contrast to the dominant black ink, preventing the composition from appearing entirely monochromatic. The arrangement of these elements lacks a traditional centre, encouraging the eye to move across the entire surface without settling on a single point of focus.

This drawing offers a view into the artist's process, showing how he manipulated ink to create rhythm and energy. The lack of a defined subject allows the viewer to engage with the raw application of the medium. It is a representative example of the period when Pollock moved away from structured imagery to explore the possibilities of pure abstraction. The work remains an important study in the development of his signature technique, which prioritised the act of painting as a physical event.

You might also like

Drawing [D182] by Morris Louis
Delaware Gap by Franz Kline
More by Jackson Pollock →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Abstract-Composition-Ink-on-Paper-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119458569.jpg?v=1792196207
