His work reflects the influence of the New York School, where he engaged with the gestural and chromatic possibilities of abstraction. This screenprint demonstrates his approach to form and colour, prioritising the physical presence of paint and the interaction between distinct, non-representational shapes.

The composition is anchored by a large, central block of deep blue. This form dominates the visual field, creating a sense of weight and stability. Surrounding this central mass are bold, energetic strokes of red and black. These elements do not suggest a specific subject, but rather communicate through their scale, placement, and the tension between the flat planes of colour. The white background acts as a necessary counterpoint, allowing the primary colours to maintain their intensity without becoming cluttered.

Guerrero often explored the relationship between light and space through these simplified, geometric forms. His process involved a careful balance of spontaneity and structure. By stripping away representational detail, he invited the viewer to engage directly with the materiality of the print. The edges of the shapes are defined by clear, decisive boundaries, which contrast with the fluid, almost calligraphic quality of the black markings. This work is representative of his later period, where he refined his visual language to focus on the essential qualities of colour and composition. It is a study in how minimal elements can create a sense of movement and balance within a static frame.

You might also like

What Red Lines Can Do by Helen Frankenthaler
Zebra by Terry Frost
More by José Guerrero →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Abstract-Composition-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121416945.jpg?v=1792204148
