untitled-etching-1-barnett-newman
Untitled Etching #1 - Barnett Newman

A minimalist etching by Barnett Newman, featuring his signature vertical band composition in stark black and white.

Barnett Newman, a central figure in the development of American abstract art, produced this etching in 1969. The work reflects his mature period, where he focused on the reduction of visual elements to their most basic components. Newman is known for his use of the 'zip', a vertical band of colour that divides the pictorial space. In this print, the composition relies on the tension between the stark white ground and the singular, bold vertical line.

The etching process allows for a specific quality of line that differs from his painted works. The ink sits within the paper fibres, creating a tactile presence that contrasts with the flat, expansive white areas. By stripping away representational imagery, Newman directs the viewer to engage with the physical scale and the immediate presence of the work. The vertical element acts as a structural anchor, defining the boundaries of the paper while simultaneously suggesting an infinite extension beyond the frame.

This piece demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between the viewer and the object. The simplicity of the arrangement encourages a direct, unmediated experience. Newman often spoke of his desire to create art that communicated a sense of place and presence without relying on traditional composition or narrative. The stark contrast between the black ink and the white paper creates a visual rhythm that is both precise and deliberate. As a late work, it represents the culmination of his exploration into the nature of space and the power of the singular mark. It remains a clear example of his approach to abstraction, where the economy of means is used to achieve a specific visual impact.

You might also like

Vertical Lines, Not Touching by Sol LeWitt
Homage to the Square by Josef Albers
Barnett Newman prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Etching-1_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119527186.jpg?v=1792196546
