This work, Untitled (Flame and Mirror), demonstrates his characteristic economy of gesture. The composition centres on a stark, white, hand-held mirror shape, which acts as a vessel for a singular, aggressive application of red pigment.

The paint appears applied with a direct, almost visceral energy, suggesting the form of a flame or a burst of heat contained within the reflective surface. Tàpies frequently utilised everyday objects to ground his abstract explorations, and here the mirror serves as a recognisable anchor for the chaotic, gestural application of colour. By juxtaposing the clean, defined outline of the mirror with the raw, textured application of paint, the artist creates a tension between the object as a functional tool and the object as a site of transformation.

His practice often involved the use of non-traditional materials and a focus on the tactile quality of the surface. In this piece, the contrast between the negative space of the paper and the saturated red pigment directs the viewer to the materiality of the paint itself. The work avoids representational narrative, instead inviting an engagement with the physical presence of the mark. Tàpies sought to elevate the mundane, finding potential for meaning in simple forms and the traces of human action. This print captures the immediacy of his process, where the act of painting becomes a record of the artist's physical presence. The simplicity of the composition allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the void and the substance, a recurring theme throughout his career.

You might also like

Untitled (T1989-A3) by Hans Hartung
Untitled (Abstract Composition) by Alberto Burri

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Flame-and-Mirror-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792127772654.jpg?v=1792293968
