This piece, Untitled (Irregular Form), presents a stark, monochromatic exploration of shape and negative space. The composition consists of a single, dense black mass set against a plain white background. The edges of the form are jagged and uneven, suggesting a rejection of the geometric precision often associated with LeWitt's wall drawings or cubic structures.

By stripping away representational imagery and colour, the artist directs attention to the relationship between the silhouette and the surrounding field. The work functions as a study in contrast, where the weight of the black ink creates a physical presence on the paper. LeWitt often utilised systems and instructions to generate his art, yet this specific work reflects a more gestural or intuitive approach to form. It avoids the rigid mathematical parameters found in his grid-based projects, offering instead a singular, irregular shape that occupies the centre of the frame.

This print captures the directness of LeWitt's approach to mark-making. The ink application is opaque, creating a flat surface that resists depth or illusion. It is an exercise in reduction, where the artist limits his visual vocabulary to the most basic elements of art: line, shape, and contrast. The result is a work that demands a quiet, focused engagement from the viewer, free from the distraction of narrative or decorative detail. It represents a specific moment in LeWitt's career where he experimented with organic, non-geometric forms, providing a counterpoint to his more famous modular constructions.

You might also like

Black Sun by Alexander Calder
Silver Series X by Joan Witek
More by Sol LeWitt →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Irregular-Form-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125719783.jpg?v=1792200087
