untitled-luohans-on-bodhi-leaf-fine-art-print
Untitled (Luohans on Bodhi Leaf) - Fine Art Print

A traditional Buddhist painting depicting Luohans on a Bodhi leaf, presented in a diptych format with a deep blue background.

This work presents a diptych format featuring a stylised Bodhi leaf shape against a deep blue ground. The left panel remains blank, showing the texture of the leaf, while the right panel contains a detailed scene depicting a group of Luohans. These figures, representing enlightened beings in the Buddhist tradition, are gathered in a natural setting. The composition employs traditional East Asian painting techniques, with fine brushwork defining the robes and facial expressions of the figures. The palette includes muted earth tones for the landscape elements, contrasted by the saturated red and blue garments worn by the central figures.

The use of the Bodhi leaf as a canvas is a specific tradition within Buddhist art, symbolising the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. The contrast between the empty leaf on the left and the narrative scene on the right creates a visual balance, often found in folding screen or album leaf formats. The gold-toned border surrounding the blue panels adds a decorative element, typical of historical mounting styles for such works. The figures are arranged in a semi-circular formation, focusing on a central seated figure who appears to be teaching or receiving the others. The surrounding environment is suggested through minimal rock and foliage forms, keeping the focus on the human subjects.

This print captures the precision of the original brushwork and the subtle colour gradations. It is a study in religious iconography and traditional composition. The work reflects a period where such paintings were often produced for devotional purposes or as part of larger sets illustrating the lives of the Luohans. The clarity of the lines and the deliberate placement of the figures within the leaf shape demonstrate a high level of technical skill, typical of professional workshops of the period.

You might also like

Section of The Amitabha Sutra - Fine Art Print — Solis Prints
Untitled (Standing Beauty, Hanging Scroll) - Fine Art Print — Fine Art Print

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Luohans-on-Bodhi-Leaf-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791086814471.jpg?v=1791855312
