The composition features large, gestural white forms set against a soft, pale green background. These white shapes suggest the presence of petals, though they remain abstracted and removed from traditional botanical representation. Twombly employs a technique where paint is allowed to drip down the surface of the canvas, creating vertical streaks that disrupt the solidity of the forms. This interaction between the static, rounded shapes and the gravity-driven drips provides a sense of movement and temporal decay.

The application of paint is direct and unrefined. Twombly focuses on the physical properties of the medium, allowing the texture of the brushwork to remain visible. The colour palette is restricted, relying on the contrast between the light green ground and the opaque white of the floral elements. This choice of colour evokes the freshness of spring, yet the execution remains firmly rooted in the artist's interest in mark-making and the history of gestural abstraction. By stripping away the details of the flower, Twombly invites the viewer to consider the essence of the subject rather than its literal appearance.

Throughout his career, Twombly moved between drawing and painting, often blurring the boundaries between the two. This piece reflects his interest in the relationship between written language and visual form, even in his more purely abstract works. The drips act as a record of the painting process, documenting the time spent in front of the canvas. It is a study in reduction, where the artist pares back the image until only the most essential visual information remains. The result is a work that balances spontaneity with a controlled, rhythmic structure.

You might also like

Blue Flowers by Vaclav Vytlacil
Number 2 by Franz Kline
Cy Twombly artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Peony-Blossom-Painting-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123583965.jpg?v=1792285547
