untitled-sf-84-045-sam-francis
Untitled (SF 84-045) - Sam Francis

A striking abstract work by Sam Francis, featuring a gestural circular form in deep blue tones against a stark white background.

Sam Francis, a central figure in the development of post-war American abstraction, produced this work in 1984. The composition is dominated by a singular, circular form rendered in varying densities of blue pigment. Francis often explored the relationship between colour and the physical void of the canvas, a practice influenced by his extensive travels and interest in Eastern philosophy.

In this piece, the application of paint suggests a fluid, gestural movement. The artist uses the viscosity of the medium to create depth, where darker, saturated tones contrast with lighter, translucent washes. Splatters of pigment surround the central motif, adding a sense of kinetic energy to the otherwise contained circular structure. The white ground remains active, functioning as a necessary component of the overall balance rather than mere negative space.

Francis was known for his ability to manipulate light through colour, a technique he refined throughout his career. His work often avoids rigid geometric constraints, opting instead for organic, floating forms that appear to expand or contract within the frame. This particular study demonstrates his command over the medium, showing how controlled application can result in a sense of spontaneity. The work reflects his focus on the materiality of paint and the interaction between hue and luminosity. By stripping away representational elements, the artist invites the viewer to engage directly with the visual properties of the work, such as the texture of the brushwork and the layering of the blue tones. This print captures the nuances of the original surface, maintaining the integrity of the artist's process and the specific tonal qualities of the 1984 composition.

You might also like

Reflections V by Helen Frankenthaler
Hero and Leander (To Christopher Marlowe) by Cy Twombly
Sam Francis prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-SF-84-045-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125106758.jpg?v=1792291761
