untitled-t1989-u11-hans-hartung
Untitled (T1989-U11) - Hans Hartung

A late-career abstract work by Hans Hartung, featuring atmospheric spray-painted forms and energetic, spontaneous drips.

Hans Hartung, a figure associated with the development of Lyrical Abstraction, produced this work in the final year of his life. The composition demonstrates his late-career experimentation with industrial tools, specifically the spray gun, to manipulate pigment across the canvas surface. Unlike his earlier works that relied on precise, calligraphic brushwork, this piece prioritises atmospheric density and the physical interaction between paint and support.

The visual field is dominated by a central, nebulous void of deep, dark tones that bleed into a lighter, ethereal ground. This dark mass acts as a gravitational centre, pulling the viewer into a space that feels both expansive and contained. Surrounding this core are erratic, spattered marks that suggest a sense of urgency or kinetic energy. These marks, created through the forceful application of paint, contrast with the soft, diffused edges of the central shadow. The interplay between the controlled spray and the spontaneous drips creates a tension between order and chaos.

Hartung often sought to capture the energy of gestures rather than represent external reality. In this specific work, the reduction of the palette to dark, moody hues allows the focus to remain entirely on the texture and the movement of the medium. The application of paint appears thin in some areas, revealing the weave of the canvas, while other sections are heavily saturated, creating a sense of depth. This piece is representative of Hartung's move toward a more meditative, yet physically demanding, mode of painting in his later years. It avoids figurative references, instead inviting the viewer to engage with the raw materiality of the paint itself. The work functions as a record of the artist's physical interaction with the canvas, capturing a specific moment of creative release.

You might also like

1-07-2001 by Zao Wou-Ki
Annunciation by Martin Kline
Hans Hartung prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-T1989-U11-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792114946538.jpg?v=1792135908
