untitled-woman-by-the-iris-pond-kajita-hanko
Untitled (Woman by the Iris Pond) - Kajita Hanko

A serene woodblock print by Kajita Hanko depicting a woman in profile overlooking an iris pond, rendered in soft, atmospheric tones.

This woodblock print by Kajita Hanko captures a quiet moment of contemplation. The composition features a woman in profile, positioned at the edge of a balcony or veranda, looking out over a pond filled with irises. Her posture is relaxed, with one hand resting on the railing, suggesting a brief pause in her day. The artist employs a soft, muted colour palette that aligns with the aesthetic sensibilities of the early twentieth-century Japanese print movement.

The figure is rendered with clean, precise lines, characteristic of Hanko's training in the Nihonga tradition. Her attire, a simple green garment with distinctive blue cord detailing, provides a subtle contrast to the natural tones of the background. The background itself is treated with a gentle gradient, suggesting the soft light of dawn or dusk. The irises in the foreground are depicted with minimal detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the atmospheric quality of the scene rather than botanical precision.

Kajita Hanko was a significant figure in the transition between traditional ukiyo-e and the modern shin-hanga movement. His work often explored themes of domesticity and feminine grace, moving away from the dramatic narratives of earlier print traditions. This piece reflects his ability to balance decorative elements with a sense of psychological stillness. The print demonstrates a refined approach to woodblock printing, where the texture of the paper and the application of ink create a sense of depth without relying on heavy outlines or excessive ornamentation. It is a study in restraint, capturing a fleeting mood through careful observation and technical control.

You might also like

Snow at Shinkawabata - Hasui Kawase — Hasui Kawase
The Moon Beyond Shinagawa - Kobayashi Kiyochika — Kobayashi Kiyochika

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Woman-by-the-Iris-Pond-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791682651114.jpg?v=1791682858
