Zoon depicting a social gathering at the Vauxhall pleasure gardens in Leiden.

This lithograph, titled Vauxhall op de Ruïne, captures a social gathering at the Vauxhall pleasure gardens in Leiden, Netherlands, during the mid-nineteenth century. Created by the Dutch artist Jac. Hazenberg Cs. Zoon in 1855, the work documents the recreational habits of the period. The scene depicts a public space characterised by formal gardens, tall obelisks, and a central bandstand where musicians perform for the assembled crowd.

The composition is structured to provide a clear view of the social hierarchy and leisure activities of the time. Figures are dressed in the fashion of the 1850s, with women in crinoline dresses and men in top hats, seated at small tables or strolling through the grounds. The architecture of the surrounding buildings and the carefully arranged trees suggest a planned urban environment designed for public entertainment. The artist employs a precise, linear style typical of topographical prints from this era, focusing on the clarity of the architectural elements and the arrangement of the figures within the space.

Lithography allowed for the mass production of such scenes, making them accessible to a wider audience interested in local history and urban development. The print serves as a visual record of the Vauxhall site, which was a popular destination for the citizens of Leiden. The muted tones and fine line work reflect the technical capabilities of mid-nineteenth-century printmaking, where the focus remained on documenting the physical reality of the location. This piece offers a glimpse into the social life of the Netherlands before the rapid industrialisation of the later century transformed such public spaces.

You might also like

A Gothic Church by Moonlight - Mary Altha Nims — Mary Altha Nims
La Géronstère fontaine de Spa - Jean Baptiste Ambroise Marcellin Jobard — Marcellin Jobard

Jac.
