In Vertical Plains Blue and Red, he explores the relationship between colour and geometric form. The composition consists of vertical bars of varying widths and heights, arranged to suggest a rhythmic, architectural structure. By stripping away figurative elements, Kupka focuses on the interaction of primary colours against a neutral, off-white background.

Kupka moved to Paris in 1896, where he became involved with the avant-garde circles that eventually led to the development of Orphism. This movement sought to move beyond the static nature of Cubism by introducing musicality and movement into abstract art. In this work, the vertical alignment of the blocks creates a sense of upward motion, reminiscent of a cityscape or a series of organ pipes. The application of paint is deliberate, with visible brushwork that adds texture to the flat planes of colour.

This piece reflects the artist's interest in theosophy and the idea that art could express spiritual or cosmic truths through pure form. Rather than depicting the physical world, Kupka uses the interplay of blue, red, black, and white to evoke a sense of order and balance. The work is a study in spatial relationships, where the negative space between the vertical elements is as important as the coloured forms themselves. It remains a clear example of the early twentieth-century shift toward total abstraction, where the canvas becomes a site for the investigation of visual language itself.

You might also like

Drawings of Curves - Frantisek Kupka — František Kupka
Rhythm Color - Robert Delaunay — Robert Delaunay

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Vertical-Plains-Blue-and-Red_Poster_CompositorV1_1791953447298.jpg?v=1791953483
