The composition looks out over the harbour area of Christianshavn, a district known for its canals and maritime history. Weie employs a palette dominated by earthy tones, terracotta reds, and muted blues, which reflect the atmospheric conditions of the Danish capital.

The brushwork is deliberate and painterly, prioritising the construction of form through blocks of colour rather than fine detail. The buildings, with their distinct gabled roofs, occupy the foreground, while the distant dome of the Marble Church or a similar structure provides a sense of scale and urban context. The interplay of light and shadow across the rooftops suggests a late afternoon sun, casting long, angular shapes that define the geometry of the square.

Weie was known for his focus on the expressive potential of colour and his interest in the works of French masters like Delacroix and Cézanne. This influence is visible in the way he simplifies the architectural elements into planes of colour. The scene avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the structural relationship between the water, the quay, and the built environment. The vertical lines of the masts and poles break the horizontal progression of the buildings, creating a balanced visual rhythm. This work provides a clear view into the artist's method of interpreting urban spaces through a modernist lens, where the physical reality of the city is filtered through a subjective, painterly approach to light and form.

You might also like

Gezicht op Parijs by Robert Delaunay
Embankments of the Seine in Paris by Albert Marquet
Edvard Weie prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/View-over-Wilder-s-Square-Christianshavn_Poster_CompositorV1_1792128074357.jpg?v=1792294924
