Zeuner was a specialist in the technique of reverse painting on glass, a process requiring the artist to apply paint to the back of a glass pane in reverse order, starting with the finest details and finishing with the background. This method produces a smooth, reflective surface that enhances the clarity of the composition.

The scene captures a skirmish involving infantry units positioned along a canal. The composition is divided by the waterway, with soldiers arranged in formation on the bank. Dense woodland forms the backdrop, while plumes of white smoke indicate the discharge of muskets. The artist employs a muted palette to convey the atmosphere of the event, focusing on the tactical arrangement of the troops and the surrounding terrain. The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, filled with heavy, grey clouds that suggest an overcast day.

Zeuner often produced these works for a Dutch audience interested in contemporary events and local topography. His ability to render fine detail on glass allowed for a level of precision that appealed to collectors of the period. The work provides a record of military activity during the late eighteenth century, documenting the uniforms, weaponry, and tactical formations of the time. The stillness of the water contrasts with the action on the bank, creating a sense of tension within the frame. This piece remains a representative example of Zeuner's technical skill and his interest in historical documentation through the medium of glass painting.

You might also like

Neo-classical Vases in a Landscape - Jean Charles Delafosse — Jean Charles Delafosse
A Grecian Lovely - John William Godward — John William Godward

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Vuurgevecht-aan-de-Vaartse-Rijn-bij-Jutphaas_Poster_CompositorV1_1789677276830.jpg?v=1791856228
