The artist, active during the mid-Edo period, is known for his contributions to the development of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the portrayal of beautiful women. Buncho often utilised a slender, elongated figure style, which is evident in the graceful posture of the subject here.

The composition features the waitress standing beside a wooden counter, holding a document or menu. A tea kettle sits on a small stove in the background, providing context to the setting. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the print is a common feature in ukiyo-e works of this era, often linking the visual image to contemporary poetry or popular culture. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted greens, which allows the viewer to focus on the linear quality of the figure and the pattern of her kimono.

Buncho was a contemporary of Katsukawa Shunsho, and their collaboration on the book 'Ehon Butai Ogi' remains a significant example of their shared aesthetic. This print reflects the typical ukiyo-e approach to space, where depth is suggested through overlapping planes rather than linear perspective. The work provides a glimpse into the urban culture of 18th-century Edo, where teahouses served as social hubs for the merchant class and urbanites. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clean lines defining the folds of the kimono and the delicate features of the waitress. It is a representative example of the refined style that defined Buncho's career.

You might also like

Evening Glow at Ryogoku Bridge - Keisai Eisen — Keisai Eisen
Nihonbashi Bridge and Edobashi Bridge - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Waitress-at-the-Minatoya-Teahouse_Poster_CompositorV1_1790870996084.jpg?v=1790872227
