The composition features a gnarled plum tree, its branches laden with white blossoms, set against a muted, atmospheric background. A pale, circular moon emerges from the upper right, providing a soft illumination that contrasts with the dark, textured bark of the tree. The artist employs a precise technique, capturing the delicate nature of the petals while maintaining the structural integrity of the heavy, twisting branches.

Jakuchū is known for his individualistic approach to traditional subjects. Unlike many of his contemporaries who adhered strictly to established schools, he observed nature with a high degree of scrutiny. This work demonstrates his ability to balance decorative elements with a sense of natural observation. The ink wash provides depth, allowing the white blossoms to appear as if they are catching the moonlight. The vertical format of the hanging scroll dictates the flow of the branches, which move across the silk surface in a rhythmic, organic manner.

This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the plum blossom served as a symbol of resilience and the arrival of spring. The artist uses a restrained palette, focusing on the interplay between light and shadow rather than a wide range of colours. The calligraphic quality of the brushwork in the branches reveals the influence of Chinese ink painting, yet the overall arrangement remains distinctly Jakuchū in its execution. The work is a study in texture, contrasting the smooth, luminous surface of the moon with the rough, weathered appearance of the plum wood. It remains a clear example of the artist's technical skill and his unique perspective on the natural world.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Flower boat (Hanabune) - Kamisaka Sekka — Kamisaka Sekka

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/White-Plum-Blossoms-and-Moon_Poster_CompositorV1_1791359359202.jpg?v=1791360715
