The composition features white poppies arranged across a six-panel folding screen, set against a luminous ground of gold leaf. Kōrin employs a decorative approach, balancing the naturalistic rendering of the flowers with a highly stylised, flat background. The gold leaf provides a reflective surface that interacts with the ambient light of a room, creating a sense of space without the use of traditional linear perspective.

The poppies are depicted with precise brushwork, showing a keen observation of their form and growth. The green foliage provides a contrast to the pale, delicate petals of the flowers. Kōrin uses a limited palette, allowing the gold and the white of the poppies to dominate the visual field. This economy of colour is a hallmark of his style, which often prioritises clarity and graphic impact over atmospheric depth. The arrangement of the plants across the panels suggests a rhythmic progression, guiding the eye from one cluster to the next.

As a representative piece of the Rinpa tradition, the screen demonstrates the integration of fine art with functional interior objects. The gold ground serves to unify the disparate elements of the composition, creating a cohesive visual experience. Kōrin was known for his ability to transform simple botanical subjects into grand, decorative statements. This print captures the essence of his technique, preserving the balance between the organic forms of the poppies and the rigid, geometric structure of the screen panels. It is a study in the application of negative space, where the gold leaf functions as an active element rather than a mere backdrop.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Peony (Folding Fan) - Takahashi Sōhei — Takahashi Sōhei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/White-Poppies_Poster_CompositorV1_1791601889870.jpg?v=1791603090
