Published as a supplement to the journal 'De Opmerker', the document provides a clear, top-down view of the proposed cemetery layout. The composition follows the formal principles of late nineteenth-century urban planning, balancing structured pathways with designated green spaces.

Thieme employs a precise, technical line quality to delineate the site. The plan features a central axis, curved carriage paths, and a distinct rectangular enclosure for the primary burial area. A legend located on the right side of the sheet identifies the various functional zones, including the entrance, administrative buildings, and the chapel. The surrounding perimeter is defined by dense vegetation, suggesting a deliberate separation between the public thoroughfare and the quietude of the burial grounds. The title block at the top centre identifies the project as a submission for the Watergraafsmeer area, commissioned by the municipality of Amsterdam.

As an architectural document, the work reflects the methodical approach of the period. The use of scale bars and clear labelling indicates its purpose as a functional blueprint for municipal development. The print captures the intersection of civic infrastructure and funerary architecture, demonstrating how designers of the era approached the spatial requirements of a growing city. The monochromatic palette and clean drafting style provide a view into the historical planning of Amsterdam's public spaces, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic and structural priorities of the late Victorian era.

You might also like

A Grecian Lovely - John William Godward — John William Godward
Le Midi - Pierre-Paul Prud'hon — Pierre-Paul Prud'hon

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Winnend-ontwerp-voor-de-Nieuwe-Oosterbegraafplaats-te-Amsterdam_Poster_CompositorV1_1791777733750.jpg?v=1791778426
https://www.solisprints.com/products/winnend-ontwerp-voor-de-nieuwe-oosterbegraafplaats-te-amsterdam-gerrit-jan-thieme
