It depicts a solitary, enigmatic figure, often interpreted as a witch, captured in a moment of transition. The central character possesses a pale, blue-toned face and a voluminous cloak of bright orange hair, which frames her form like a mantle. Her attire is equally unusual, consisting of a white, lace-like bodice that opens to reveal a dark, swirling void within her torso, suggesting a connection to the esoteric or the supernatural.

In her left hand, she holds a small, bird-like creature with a long, flowing tail, while her right hand grips a lantern that emits a sharp, star-shaped light. The figure stands against a neutral, grey background, which emphasises the contrast between her ethereal appearance and the grounded nature of the composition. Varo frequently explored themes of alchemy, mysticism, and the occult in her paintings, often using precise, delicate brushwork to render impossible or dreamlike scenarios. This piece is characteristic of her mature style, where she combined technical rigour with a fascination for the unseen world. The figure appears to be in motion, perhaps travelling toward the titular sabbath, yet she remains suspended in a quiet, meditative state. The attention to texture, particularly in the rendering of the hair and the fabric of the cloak, demonstrates Varo's ability to imbue her subjects with a sense of physical presence despite their fantastical nature. Her work remains a singular contribution to the mid-twentieth-century surrealist movement, reflecting a personal iconography that draws upon both historical art traditions and her own imaginative explorations.

You might also like

The Lovers by René Magritte
Painting (Man with a Pipe) by Joan Miró
Remedios Varo prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Witch-Going-to-the-Sabbath_Poster_CompositorV1_1792116948897.jpg?v=1792139189
