The subject, a woman standing in profile, rests her hands upon the keys of a virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the period. Flinck, a pupil of Rembrandt, demonstrates his command of form and light through the use of black chalk. The drawing relies on subtle shading to define the folds of the woman's dress and the volume of her figure against the simple background.

Flinck was a successful painter in Amsterdam, known for his portraits and historical scenes. This sketch reflects the broader interest among Dutch artists in depicting everyday activities within the home. The composition is focused on the interaction between the musician and her instrument, conveying a sense of stillness. The artist uses varied pressure to suggest the texture of the fabric and the weight of the figure, showing a clear understanding of anatomy and drapery. The lack of elaborate detail allows the viewer to focus on the posture and the concentration of the woman as she prepares to play.

As a preparatory work, this drawing offers a glimpse into the working methods of a Dutch Golden Age master. The lines are confident, indicating a quick observation of the scene. The paper tone provides a neutral base, allowing the dark chalk marks to create a sense of depth. This piece is a fine example of the observational skills required of artists during this era, where the study of human figures in natural poses was a standard part of artistic training. It remains a direct, unadorned record of a domestic scene, preserved through the medium of chalk.

You might also like

Houten huis en tekenaar by Abraham Furnerius
Zittende oude vrouw met geheven hand by Cornelis Pronk

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Woman-at-a-Virginal_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124010580.jpg?v=1792400113
